The Winter Run: Central Park Half Marathon in New York City
IN REVIEW ~ NYC Running Event: 2024
Returning for a second year, I decided to tackle the 5k rather than the half marathon this time around. I hadn’t trained quite enough for the 13.1 miles, and my friend and I agreed on a much less grueling run so we could maximize our time enjoying a winter weekend in New York City.

Heading over to the Start Line
The day started with a crisp chill, but the energy of the crowd heading to the start line was infectious. It’s always great to see the camaraderie among runners and supporters in Central Park. I was relieved and happy to cross the 5k finish line in just over 30 minutes. That easy start to the day meant the rest of Sunday was all about relaxing and exploring the city!

I was happy with the run overall, but I do feel a little guilty for not training up to the full half marathon distance, which requires tackling the Central Park course’s three-lap circuit. The 5k, by contrast, was an easy, single loop. Regardless of the distance, I was thrilled to be there with my friend to celebrate my birthday month. New York City in the winter has become our annual tradition—it’s less crowded, more affordable, and overall a wonderful time to visit!
